Deadly Echoes
At sea, the twins fight for their lives against Ripley. Keyleth undergoes a dangerous earth ritual to locate Raishan, one that could cost her life. Pike and Grog’s quest is no less perilous, as they struggle to convince Kaylie to help save Scanlan.
The battle continues for Keyleth in her earth trial and must make a dangerous gambit to not only get the information and power that she needs, but also to save her own life. At the same time, the twins fight for their lives against Ripley and her forces. I love the immediacy of those scenes and how brilliantly they rise in tension. Each moment flows beautifully into the next until they capture one moment in a brilliant cliffhanger while giving the other moment the emotional beats I wanted for the character.
Kaylie agrees to come back with Pike and there is a great Grog moment to open the scene before things get serious and emotional for Scanlan. I loved that scene and the moments that followed because it gave Kaylie a sense of agency I wanted to see and an emotional vulnerability from Scanlan that I needed to see.
The fight on the boat is fantastic. Every visual beat is amazing and I cannot be more impressed with the animation and the animators that bring this series to vibrant life. There were thrills throughout every moment and you could feel the tension, suspense and danger the characters faced in every scene.
All the parts of the episode work brilliantly as Vex finally deals with her recent loss while coming to terms with the dark reality of revenge. Keyleth finds her inner strength and the confidence that she has been exuding throughout the season as she finally begins to both embrace the power within her and how her strength is connected to the people she loves. Scanlan has a great moment of personal growth as he finds himself facing his daughter again and taking the first steps towards being the father he wants to be with her. Everything in the episode ramps up the tension as the team prepares to face off against Raishan and whatever she has planned for the body of Thordak.
